ForwardMarkets has an interesting post about personal motivation and AI (in particular, GAs). AI and GAs were a labor of love in his case, but they are for most of us. GAs were/are CP-cool and CP-easy (cocktail party cool to talk about and fairly easy to convey the main ideas), but they are engaging enough to get totally lost in. You like analysis, have we got analysis to do. You like design, have we got creative ways to fiddle with mechanism. You like applications, the spectrum of human endeavor is your oyster. And if you have a contrarian streak, you get to rebel against the received CS/AI wisdom and be on the edge, although (hopefully?) some of that is going away (see SIGEVO: From Outlaws to Mainstream post here).
