Catching up on GAs

Thanks to ForwardMarkets for noticing IlliGAL Blogging. The post mentioned the value of this site in catching up on GAs since the publication of my 1989 book, Genetic Algorithms in Search, Optimization, and Machine Learning (GASOML). In 2002, I completed the now Google searchable The Design of Innovation: Lessons from and for Competent Genetic Algorithms (DoI). The aim of the volume was to fill a void between largely empirical studies of this, that, or the other new operator and purely theoretical studies using lovely mathematics that have very little to tell us about the design of GAs that really work. The approach of the book in understanding fundamental facetwise and patchquilt models has been extended to understanding multiobjective GAs, classifier systems, and organizational size. Such usable theory may answer exactly the kinds of questions IlliGAL Blogging readers have been accumulating since the publication of GASOML.
