In fact, GP is already having human-competitive results. One example is the replication of human inventions in the field of electronics. Quoting Scientific American:

Evolution is an immensely powerful creative process. From the intricate biochemistry of individual cells to the elaborate structure of the human brain, it has produced wonders of unimaginable complexity. Evolution achieves these feats with a few simple processes-mutation, sexual recombination and natural selection-which it iterates for many generations. Now computer programmers are harnessing software versions of these same processes to achieve machine intelligence. Called genetic programming, this technique has designed computer programs and electronic circuits that perform specified functions.

In the field of electronics, genetic programming has duplicated 15 previously patented inventions, including several that were hailed as seminal in their respective fields when they were first announced. Six of these 15 existing inventions were patented after January 2000 by major research institutions, which indicates that they represent current frontiers of research in domains of scientific and practical importance. Some of the automatically produced inventions infringe squarely on the exact claims of the previously patented inventions. Others represent new inventions by duplicating the functionality of the earlier device in a novel way. One of these inventions is a clear improvement over its predecessor.
 

Hi, I have a question (it might be basic, I do physics research, but now I'm really interested in G-As too) - it seems that in developing these programs you have a bunch of different competitors try and produce some result, then you pick the one that did the best job, introduce a lot 'micro'-mutations in different new versions to make a new batch, pick the winner again and iterate, thus asymtopically approaching the ideal program for the job. The question is, do you also make use of the island mechanism - i.e. also produce 'macro'-mutation groups and let them evolve independently to a solution and then compete among the products of different islands? Presumably this would allow you to avoid getting stuck in a local minima in fitness space...
 

I've heard tell that, whereas John Koza invented GP, Dave Goldberg first suggested "genetic programming" as a name for it. Dave?
 

Travis, I just wanted to mention that evolutionary algorithms are usually population-based approaches. Therefore, one usually doesn't "pick the best one" and apply micro-mutations. Instead, the variation operators such as recombination and mutation is applied to the entire population of candidate programs. That is, rather than a single program evolving, a population of candidate solutions evolves.

Selection prefers good programs over bad ones and provides more copies to better programs. Recombination combines pieces of code between two programs to create new offspring solutions (programs). Mutation slightly modifies (random-walk in the vicinity of the program) the offspring programs.

Now to answer your question, yes researchers have often use island (and other parallel) models, not only to take advantage of embarrassingly parallel nature of evolutionary algorithms, but also to maintain diversity and achieve better performance.
 

Hi Kumara - cool stuff. I'm wondering if I could apply these techniques to my numerical relativity work - probably not, but it's fun to think about. It'd probably have to be pretty high level... And there's certainly a lot of material on the genetic-programing website. And it's great that G-As are so compatible with parallel processing - that's probably where hardware performance advances are going to come from for quite a while.
 

Yes, Stewart, I believe I did name genetic programming. John Koza and I were talking on the phone and I said something like, "I really like that genetic programming stuff you are doing," and the name stuck.
